Nuggets: Searching for NBA gold at the end of many rainbows

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:37:29 GMT

DENVER (AP) — At times, the Denver Nuggets were easy – sometimes, too easy – to love, with their rainbow uniforms, their rumpled grumposaurus of a coach and a defense-optional game plan that kept the scoreboard clicking into the 120s and 130s night after night. At other times, loving them was more difficult, say, during those 50, 60 and 70-loss seasons in the ’90s that installed a revolving door on the coach’s office, or even during a decade-long resurgence in the 2000s when they were led by a fickle superstar who ultimately bailed for New York City. And even now, with the Nuggets the top seed in the Western Conference, Denver has yet to be mistaken for much beyond an NBA novelty. Such is life in a league driven by superstars who are on a first-name basis with fans — Magic, Michael, LeBron and Steph — but never by a team that doesn’t win titles, doesn’t even play for them, and doesn’t get much love even when the two-maybe-three-time MVP is on its roster. And yet, as a...

GENEVA (AP) — Qatar is going to host another World Cup.The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) picked Qatar to host the 2027 edition of its marquee men’s World Cup. It did not say whether there were any other bidders. Doha will stage all games in the 32-team event, FIBA said, citing upgraded subway and public transport networks that were completed for the men’s soccer World Cup played last November and December.Qatar faced fierce criticism during a massive, 12-year construction project preparing for the soccer World Cup over the gas-rich nation’s treatment of a migrant labor force that was essential for the building work.FIBA made no reference to labor or human rights issues in announcing its decision on the eve of the 2023 tournament draw. “With all of the teams playing in the same city, fans can plan everything far in advance and enjoy a unique experience since all venues are within 30 minutes of each other,” the Switzerland-based governing body said. “Additionally, a...

A wrong-way crash on the Florida Turnpike near the Hard Rock Stadium has caused emergency responders to close down the roads in order to airlift a driver involved in the collision. According to Florida Highway Patrol, on Friday morning, a white Chevy Camaro traveled north on the southbound lanes of the highway, near the Southwest 199th Street exit, before it collided with a silver Toyota pickup truck. Live video footage showed the damage to the cars involved; the Chevy was completely demolished while the truck appeared to have stopped right in front of a concrete barrier. Officials said the driver of the Chevy was pinned inside. After he was removed, the man was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center with serious injuries. The driver of the truck sustained minor injuries. (CNN) — A Seattle medical center is reporting 31 confirmed cases of a bacterial infection since October, according to a news release from the Virginia Mason Medical Center. The most recent confirmed case was identified on April 3.“Beginning in October 2022, Virginia Mason Medical Center detected an increase in cases of Klebsiella pneumoniae bacteria at our downtown campus,” Sydney Bersante, Virginia Mason Medical Center’s interim president said in the statement. “We immediately implemented increased safety measures, notified patients who had tested positive for the bacteria, and promptly provided treatment where necessary.”Bersante added that while the “risk of transmission is extremely low for patients,” the medical center is investigating the source of transmission and is taking precautions to prevent additional cases.Klebsiella is a type of bacteria that lives in the intestines that can lead to illnesses in healthcare settings such ...

Ocean census aims to discover 100,000 previously unknown marine species

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:37:29 GMT

(CNN) — Researchers have embarked on an ambitious global initiative to discover and record marine life hidden in the world’s oceans.Ocean Census aims to identify 100,000 unknown species in the next 10 years, allowing scientists to better understand and protect the deep-sea ecosystem. There are huge gaps in our knowledge of the ocean depths. Of the 2.2 million species believed to exist in the Earth’s oceans, only 240,000 have been described by scientists, according to the census. The initiative builds on past projects such as the Census of Marine Life, which concluded in 2010 and identified 6,000 potential new ocean species.New advances in technology include high-resolution underwater imaging, machine learning, and sequencing of DNA contained in seawater. The innovations will help accelerate the speed and scale of discovery of new life forms, said marine biologist Alex Rogers, the project’s science director. He is a professor of conservation biology at the Unive...

Dutch court orders man who fathered 550 kids to stop donating sperm

A Dutch judge has ordered a “mass sperm donor” who’s already fathered at least 550 children to stop donating. The man donated sperm in the Netherlands and abroad, including to Danish sperm bank Cryos, but also offered his sperm up via online platforms. He donated to at least 11 Dutch fertility clinics, which imposed a maximum of 25 children in 12 families per donor, while making false promises that he hadn’t offered his sperm elsewhere and wouldn’t do so in the future. In 2017, it was discovered that he’d already fathered 102 children via those clinics. The judge ruled that the man “deliberately lied to get parents to pick him as a donor,” knowing full well that they wouldn’t have chosen him if they’d known how many children he’d already helped conceive. The man claimed he was acting in the interests of prospective parents, who he wanted to help. One mother and Stichting Donorkind, an organization that represented several ...

Court reinstates charges against leaders of Holyoke veterans’ home

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:37:29 GMT

BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts’ highest court overruled a lower court judge Thursday and reinstated criminal neglect charges against two top former officials at a veterans’ home. Nearly 80 veterans died at the Veterans’ Home in Holyoke after contracting the coronavirus in one of the worst COVID-19 outbreaks in a long-term care facility in the nation. The ruling allows the case against Bennett Walsh, the former superintendent at the facility, and Dr. David Clinton, its former medical director, to move forward. In their ruling, the majority of the justices found that the facts presented to the grand jury constituted probable cause to believe that Walsh and Clinton violated the elder abuse statute and that Hampden Superior Court Judge Edward McDonough Jr. erred in dismissing the charges.“Of course, sometimes bad things happen for no discernable reason, and no one is to blame. At any subsequent trial, prosecutors will need to prove their case. We conclude only that they will have the o...
